Personally I have backups locally on an external drive, and copies in the cloud. If your backups fail then your emails on gone.

Now you could use sync services, like syncthing ( ) to share your TB folder across your devices to access in multiple locations. You will only ever be able to access on that computer. If you synced with POP3, then everything synced to your computer would be downloaded to your computer and no copies left in the cloud. But with the IMAP setup a copy is still stored in the online mail providers account so you can still access all your mail from any device. The filters only work when I manually run the filters.What I do is in the account settings in TB I have the sync settings set to store everything locally. But no matter what I've done to activate "Checking Mail", the filters don't run and nothing happens. I created two filters and they work well so now I see what folk have meant by using filters.īut what does "Checking mail" mean? I selected "Apply filter when: Checking Mail or Manually Run".

I didn't know filters could be run manually and based on age. It sounds like you keep it in the inbox until you decide to archive it. So the real question is whether you normally automatically organize your new mail into different folders or keep it in the inbox. There is a checkbox to tell the archive function to keep the existing folder structure when archiving messages. That is less work than manually selecting and moving the messages if you have a lot of them, and they are already sorted into different folders. I don't bother archiving messages (I typically delete about 90% of my mail after reading it) but if I did, I'd probably create a message filter for each folder that tested how old the message was and moved "old" messages to the appropriate archive folder, and once a month manually run that filter. Personally, I use message filters to automatically file messages into the appropriate folders. This works best with IMAP accounts "since the search will be updated online every time you open the Saved Search folder". That basically lets you have your cake and eat it too. It sounds like you keep it in the inbox until you decide to archive it.ĭon't over look the possibility of using message filters to automatically file messages into the appropriate folder while using a virtual folder (created using saved search) to view all new mail, regardless of where it is stored.
